Noise Program

One of the main environmental impacts caused by airport activities is the noise generated by equipment located in the courtyard of airports and aircraft operations.

Seeking to reduce this impact, Infraero has been making efforts to propose alternatives to monitor, reduce and control noise, based on technical and scientific studies, conducted in partnership with research institutions and companies in the market specialized in noise.

Four main lines of action should be taken into account by the aviation agencies in the management of aircraft noise: noise reduction at the generating source, adapting the landing and takeoff procedures to the reality of each airport, restricting the operation of aircrafts in certain periods and monitoring of land cover in the vicinity of the airport site (a measure which belongs to the municipal government).

The inspection of the use of soil in the vicinity required the articulation with local municipalities to ensure the compliance with the Noise Zoning Plan (PZR), which restricts the use and occupation of land nearby airports.

Infraero is also on the stage of implanting a modern Noise Monitoring System, comprising fixed monitoring units, installed at strategic points in the surrounding areas to the international airports of Brasília and Guarulhos.

This system will allow the identification of commercial flights which cause noise impact on the urban environment in order to subsidize the organs of civil aviation in the formulation of new routes and / or procedures to minimize or control noise in the airport vicinity.

Currently there are studies that provide Infraero with a significant amount of data about the noise impact on its airports:

• Studies on Technical and Economic Feasibility for the replacement of auxiliary equipment of aircrafts in the courtyard by Fixed Utilities, with the aim of providing energy, water and air conditioning to the aircrafts by means of fixed appliances in the yard;

• Conducting campaigns on noise at critical airports;

• Capacity building of employees in the area of noise to support the operations of identifying, monitoring and reducing aircraft noise.
